Carbon Tax

Blue Environment welcomes the introduction of a carbon tax as an overdue economic reform and applauds the setting of an 80% emissions reduction target by 2050. The battle for a safe climate may require centuries or millenia of effort; Australia has a moral obligation to contribute to this effort by shifting to a low carbon economy. Pricing carbon is by far the best economic policy option to this end. The poor quality of the public debate on climate change is lamentable, especially media presentations that attribute similar import to mainstream science and to the opinions of unqualified and openly ideological commentators.

Presentations

The Waste Management Association of Australia held its state conference in Melbourne in June 2011. Three Blue Environment staff presented papers at the conference.

Christine Wardle was invited to be a guest speaker at the Waste Management Association of Australia's Annual Members Meeting in Hobart in March 2011. Christine presented the findings of a review of governance, funding and management practices for waste in southern Tasmania.

Dr Joe Pickin was invited to present a paper on the future of industrial and commercial waste recycling at a Melbourne conference in March 2011. Joe's presentation addressed the greenhouse implications of waste management choices, considering recycling, energy recovery and landfill disposal for a range of materials.

Women in the Environment

The “Women in the Environment” group was established in Melbourne in 2002 to foster communication between women professionals across a range of disciplines within the environment industry.
